In case of vertical circular motion of a particle by a thread of length r, if the tension in the thread is zero at an angle 30 shown in figure, the velocity at the bottom point (A) of the circular path is (g = gravitational acceleration) [figure]

  1. 72gr
  2. 4gr
  3. 52gr
  4. 5gr

Answer

(1) 72gr

Solution

At the given point the thread makes 30 above the horizontal, so it is at height r 30 = r2 above the centre.

Radial component of gravity (towards centre) = mg 30

With T = 0: mg 30 = mv2r

v2 = gr2

Height of this point above A = r + r2 = 3r2

Energy conservation between A and this point:

12mvA2 = 12mv2 + mg ( 3r2 )

vA2 = gr2 + 3gr = 72gr

vA = 72gr

A small bob A of mass m is attached to a massless rigid rod of length 1 m pivoted at point P and kept at an angle of 60 with vertical as shown in figure. At distance of 1 m below point P, an identical bob B is kept at rest on a smooth horizontal surface that extends to a circular track of radius R as shown in figure. If bob B just manages to complete the circular path of radius R upto a point Q after being hit elastically by bob A, then radius R is m. [figure]

A bead P sliding on a frictionless semi-circular string (ACB) and it is at point S at t = 0 and at this instant the horizontal component of its velocity is v. Another bead Q of the same mass as P is ejected from point A at t = 0 along the horizontal string AB, with the speed v, friction between the beads and the respective strings may be neglected in both cases. Let tP and tQ be the respective times taken by beads P and Q to reach the point B, then the relation between tP and tQ is [figure]

  1. tP < tQ
  2. tP = tQ
  3. tP > 1.25tQ
  4. tP > tQ
