How many organisms in the list given below are autotrophs? Lactobacillus, Nostoc, Chara, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Streptomyces, Saccharomyces, Trypanosoma, Porphyra, Wolffia

  1. Four
  2. Five
  3. Six
  4. Three

Answer

(3) Six

Solution

Autotrophs (make their own food):

⇒ Nostoc – photosynthetic cyanobacterium

⇒ Chara – green alga

⇒ Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter – chemosynthetic autotrophic bacteria

⇒ Porphyra – red alga

⇒ Wolffia – flowering plant (smallest angiosperm)

Heterotrophs: Lactobacillus (bacterium), Streptomyces (actinomycete), Saccharomyces (yeast, fungus) and Trypanosoma (protozoan).

∴ Number of autotrophs = 6

Answer: (3)
