Advantage of cleistogamy is

  1. no dependence on pollinators
  2. vivipary
  3. higher genetic variability
  4. more vigorous offspring.

Answer

(1) no dependence on pollinators

Solution

As per NCERT, cleistogamous flowers do not open at all; the anthers and stigma lie close to each other, so pollen falls on the stigma of the same flower.

⇒ Hence cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous, and assured seed-set takes place even in the absence of pollinators.

∵ Self-pollination reduces genetic variability and does not give more vigorous offspring.

∴ The advantage of cleistogamy is no dependence on pollinators.
