Which of the following contraceptive methods do involve a role of hormone?
- CuT, Pills, Emergency contraceptives
- Pills, Emergency contraceptives, Barrier methods
- Lactational amenorrhea, Pills, Emergency contraceptives
- Barrier method, Lactational amenorrhea, Pills
Answer
(3) Lactational amenorrhea, Pills, Emergency contraceptives
Solution
As per NCERT, lactational amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation during intense lactation following parturition; ovulation and therefore the cycle do not occur during this period (high prolactin of lactation suppresses the gonadotropins), so it is a hormone-based natural method.
Oral pills contain progestogens or progestogen–estrogen combinations which inhibit ovulation and implantation.
Emergency contraceptives (progestogens or progestogen–estrogen combinations, or an IUD) used within 72 hours of coitus are also hormonal.
CuT acts by releasing Cu ions (no hormone) and barrier methods act only mechanically,
the methods that involve hormones are lactational amenorrhea, pills and emergency contraceptives.
