Two circular coils 1 and 2 are made from the same wire but the radius of the 1st coil is twice that of the 2nd coil. What ratio of potential difference in volts should be applied across them so that the magnetic field at their centres is the same?

  1. 2
  2. 3
  3. 4
  4. 6

Answer

(3) 4

Solution

As per NCERT, field at the centre of a circular coil: B = 0 I2r

B1 = B2 I1r1 = I2r2 I1I2 = r1r2 = 2

Same wire (same cross-section and material): R length = 2 r

R1R2 = r1r2 = 2

V1V2 = I1 R1I2 R2 = 2 2 = 4
