The oxygenation activity of RuBisCO enzyme in photorespiration leads to the formation of

  1. 1 molecule of 3-C compound and 1 molecule of 2-C compound
  2. 1 molecule of 3-C compound
  3. 1 molecule of 6-C compound
  4. 2 molecules of 3-C compound

Answer

(1) 1 molecule of 3-C compound and 1 molecule of 2-C compound

Solution

Carboxylation (Calvin cycle): RuBP + CO2 2 PGA (2 molecules of 3-C compound).

Oxygenation (photorespiration): RuBP + O2 PGA + phosphoglycolate

⇒ As per NCERT, in photorespiration RuBP binds with O2 to form one molecule of phosphoglycerate (3-C) and one molecule of phosphoglycolate (2-C).
