Solution

Step 1: Sulphonation

–Br is ortho/para directing. SO3 (bulky electrophile) enters mainly at the para position (less steric hindrance).

A = 4-bromobenzenesulphonic acid

Step 2: Bromination (Br2, Fe)

–Br directs to its ortho positions (para is blocked); -SO3H directs to its meta positions.

Both effects reinforce at the carbon ortho to Br and meta to -SO3H.

B = 3,4-dibromobenzenesulphonic acid (new Br next to the old Br)
