Which will make basic buffer?
- 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl + 200 mL of 0.1 M NH4OH
- 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl + 100 mL of 0.1 M NH4OH
- 50 mL of 0.1 M NaOH + 25 mL of 0.1 M CH3COOH
- 100 mL of 0.1 M CH3COOH + 100 mL of 0.1 M NaOH
Answer
(1) 100 mL of 0.1 M HCl + 200 mL of 0.1 M NH4OH
Solution
A basic buffer contains a weak base and its salt with a strong acid (e.g. NH4OH + NH4Cl).
(1) HCl = 100 × 0.1 = 10 mmol; NH4OH = 200 × 0.1 = 20 mmol
HCl + NH4OH NH4Cl + H2O ⇒ 10 mmol NH4Cl + 10 mmol NH4OH left ⇒ basic buffer
(2) 10 mmol each ⇒ only NH4Cl (salt) ⇒ not a buffer
(3) NaOH = 5 mmol, CH3COOH = 2.5 mmol ⇒ excess strong base NaOH + CH3COONa ⇒ not a buffer
(4) 10 mmol each ⇒ only CH3COONa ⇒ not a buffer
