[figure] Three forces acting on a body are shown in the figure. To have the resultant force only along the y-direction, the magnitude of the minimum additional force needed is

  1. 34 N
  2. 3 N
  3. 0.5 N
  4. 1.5 N

Answer

(3) 0.5 N

Solution

Resolve the forces along the x-axis.

4 N acts at 30 to the y-axis (towards –x): Fx = -4 30 = -2 N

1 N acts at 60 to the x-axis: Fx = 1 60 = 0.5 N

2 N acts opposite to the 4 N force: Fx = 2 30 = 1 N

x = -2 + 0.5 + 1 = -0.5 N

To make the resultant only along the y-direction, the x-component must be cancelled. The minimum additional force is 0.5 N along the +x direction.
