Which of the following amine(s) show(s) positive carbylamine test? Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. C Only
  2. B, C and D Only
  3. A and E Only
  4. A and C Only

Answer

(4) A and C Only

Solution

Carbylamine reaction is given only by primary amines (aliphatic and aromatic):

R-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH R-NC + 3KCl + 3H2O

A: aniline, C6H5NH2 — 1° amine positive

B: (CH3)2NH — 2° amine negative

C: CH3NH2 — 1° amine positive

D: (CH3)3N — 3° amine negative

E: N-methylaniline, C6H5NHCH3 — 2° amine negative

A and C only.

Answer: (4)
