In the figure shown here, what is the equivalent focal length of the combination of lenses (Assume that all layers are thin) ? [figure]

  1. -40 cm
  2. -100 cm
  3. -50 cm
  4. 40 cm

Answer

(2) -100 cm

Solution

The combination is a biconvex glass lens (n1 = 1.5) between two plano-concave liquid lenses (n2 = 1.6).

Biconvex lens: 1f1 = (1.5 - 1) ( 120 + 120 ) = 120

Each plano-concave liquid lens: 1f2 = (1.6 - 1) (- 120 ) = - 3100

1F = 1f1 + 2f2

= 120 - 6100

= - 1100 cm-1

F = -100 cm
