Suppose a, b, c are in A.P. and a2, 2b2, c2 are in G.P. If a < b < c and a + b + c = 1, then 9(a2 + b2 + c2) is equal to .

Answer

9

Solution

A.P.: a + c = 2b and a + b + c = 1 3b = 1 b = 13, a + c = 23

G.P.: (2b2)2 = a2c2 ac = 2b2 = 29

If ac = 29: (a - c)2 = (a + c)2 - 4ac = 49 - 89 < 0, not possible.

ac = - 29 (then a c, and a < c can be chosen)

a2 + c2 = (a + c)2 - 2ac = 49 + 49 = 89

a2 + b2 + c2 = 89 + 19 = 1

9(a2 + b2 + c2) = 9

Answer: 9
