Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect

Answer

(1) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Solution

Statement I: Cr2+ (3d4) Cr3+ (3d3, half-filled t2g level) by losing an electron, so Cr2+ is reducing.

Mn3+ (3d4) Mn2+ (3d5, extra stable half-filled) by gaining an electron, so Mn3+ is oxidising.

Statement I is incorrect (the two are interchanged).

Statement II: Sc3+ = [Ar] 3d0 has no unpaired electron diamagnetic.

∵ As per NCERT, diamagnetic substances are repelled by the applied magnetic field.

Statement II is correct.
