Zr (Z = 40) and Hf (Z = 72) have similar atomic and ionic radii because of :
- Having similar chemical properties
- Belonging to same group
- Diagonal relationship
- Lanthanoid contraction
Answer
(4) Lanthanoid contraction
Solution
As per NCERT, Hf (5d series) comes after the 14 lanthanoids, in which the 4f orbitals are filled.
∵ 4f electrons shield the nuclear charge very poorly ⇒ the size decreases steadily across the lanthanoids (lanthanoid contraction).
This decrease almost exactly cancels the expected increase in size from the 4d to the 5d series.
∴ Zr (160 pm) and Hf (159 pm) have almost identical radii.
