Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 30 January (Evening Shift)

Choose the correct statements about the hydrides of group 15 elements. Choose the most appropriate from the options given below :

  1. C and D only
  2. A and D only
  3. A and B only
  4. B and C only

Answer

(3) A and B only

Solution

Down group 15: atomic size ↑ ⇒ E–H bond dissociation enthalpy ↓ (NH3 389 → BiH3 255 kJ mol-1)

A: weaker E–H bond ⇒ stability decreases NH3 → BiH3 ⇒ A is true

B: weaker E–H bond gives H more easily ⇒ reducing ability increases ⇒ B is true

C: reverse of B — BiH3 is the strongest, NH3 only mild ⇒ C is false

D: lone pair in a larger, diffuse orbital ⇒ basicity decreases NH3 > PH3 > AsH3 > SbH3 BiH3 ⇒ D is false

∴ A and B only

Answer: (3)
