Which one of the following is a chain growth polymer?

  1. Starch
  2. Nucleic acid
  3. Polystyrene
  4. Protein

Answer

(3) Polystyrene

Solution

As per NCERT, addition polymers are formed by the repeated addition of monomer molecules possessing double or triple bonds; since the chain grows through free-radical (or ionic) intermediates, this is chain growth polymerisation.

n C6H5CH=CH2 (-CH2-CH(C6H5)-)n (polystyrene)

∵ Starch, nucleic acids and proteins are condensation (step growth) biopolymers formed with loss of water.

∴ Polystyrene is a chain growth polymer.
