If y = ( 3 + -1 x2 ), then (x - y)2 + 3y2 is equal to .

Answer

3

Solution

Let = -1 x2, so = x2 and = 4 - x22 (∵ [0, ])

y = 3 - 3

= x4 - 34 4 - x2

x - 4y = 3 4 - x2

Squaring: x2 - 8xy + 16y2 = 12 - 3x2

4x2 - 8xy + 16y2 = 12

x2 - 2xy + 4y2 = 3

(x - y)2 + 3y2 = 3

Answer: 3
