In which condition, the gene ratio remains constant for any species population ?

  1. Gene flow
  2. Mutation
  3. Sexual selection
  4. Random mating

Answer

(4) Random mating

Solution

As per NCERT, allele frequencies in a population are stable and constant from generation to generation (Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium), p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1.

∵ Gene migration (gene flow), genetic drift, mutation, genetic recombination and natural (including sexual) selection disturb this equilibrium.

⇒ Equilibrium needs a large population with random mating and no such disturbing factor.

∴ The gene ratio remains constant under random mating.
