First life on earth was : -

  1. Autotrophs
  2. Photoautotrophs
  3. Cyanobacteria
  4. Chemoheterotrophs

Answer

(4) Chemoheterotrophs

Solution

As per NCERT (Oparin–Haldane), the first form of life arose from pre-existing non-living organic molecules (RNA, protein etc.) in the 'hot dilute soup' of the primitive sea.

⇒ The first organisms were anaerobic and could not make their own food; they obtained energy by breaking down the ready-made organic molecules present around them.

⇒ Such organisms are chemoheterotrophs; autotrophs (including photoautotrophs like cyanobacteria) evolved later.

∴ First life on earth was chemoheterotrophic.
