Which of the following is not the property of cathode rays?

  1. It produces heating effect
  2. It does not deflect in electric field
  3. It casts shadow
  4. It produces fluorescence.

Answer

(2) It does not deflect in electric field

Solution

As per NCERT, cathode rays are streams of fast-moving negatively charged particles (electrons).

⇒ They travel in straight lines and cast shadows of objects placed in their path.

⇒ They produce fluorescence on glass / zinc sulphide and heat the target they strike.

∵ They are charged, they are deflected by electric and magnetic fields.

∴ "It does not deflect in electric field" is not a property of cathode rays.
