The best method for the separation of naphthalene and benzoic acid from their mixture is

  1. distillation
  2. sublimation
  3. chromatography
  4. crystallisation.

Answer

(2) sublimation

Solution

As per NCERT, sublimation is used to separate a sublimable compound from a non-sublimable one: on heating, the sublimable solid changes directly into vapour, which condenses back to the solid on cooling.

Naphthalene is volatile and sublimes readily on gentle heating, whereas benzoic acid (held as hydrogen-bonded dimers) remains behind.

∴ Sublimation is the best method for this separation.
