Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer
(4) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Solution
Statement I: Hofmann bromamide degradation gives an amine with one carbon less:
C6H5CONH2 + Br2 + 4NaOH C6H5NH2 + Na2CO3 + 2NaBr + 2H2O
⇒ benzamide gives aniline, not benzylamine ∴ Statement I is false.
Statement II: In HNO3/H2SO4, aniline is protonated to anilinium ion (C6H5NH3+), which is meta-directing.
As per NCERT, nitration gives p-nitroaniline (51%), m-nitroaniline (47%) and o-nitroaniline (2%)
⇒ m-nitroaniline (47%) > o-nitroaniline (2%) ∴ Statement II is true.
