Trichloroacetaldehyde, CCl3CHO reacts with chlorobenzene in presence of sulphuric acid and produces

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(3) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, DDT (p,p′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is prepared by heating chloral with chlorobenzene in the presence of conc. H2SO4.

CCl3CHO + 2C6H5Cl conc. H2SO4 (p-ClC6H4)2CH-CCl3 + H2O

The C=O carbon of chloral becomes the central CH carbon, joined to two p-chlorophenyl groups and the CCl3 group.
