The energy released if hydrogen atoms are combined to form 24He is MeV. (Take binding energies per nucleon of 12H and 24He as 1.1 MeV and 7.2 MeV, respectively)

  1. 6.1
  2. 24.4
  3. 26.6
  4. 5

Answer

(2) 24.4

Solution

12H+12H 24He

Total binding energy = (BE per nucleon) × (number of nucleons)

Reactants: 2 (2 1.1)=4.4 MeV

Product: 4 7.2=28.8 MeV

Energy released = BE of product − BE of reactants

∴ Q=28.8-4.4=24.4 MeV

Answer: (2)
