Which of the following compounds will exhibit cis-trans (geometrical) isomerism?

  1. Butanol
  2. 2-Butyne
  3. 2-Butanol
  4. 2-Butene

Answer

(4) 2-Butene

Solution

As per NCERT, geometrical (cis-trans) isomerism is shown by alkenes in which each doubly bonded carbon carries two different atoms or groups, because rotation about the C=C bond is restricted.

Butanol and 2-butanol: no C=C bond no geometrical isomerism.

2-Butyne, CH3-C C-CH3: linear around the triple bond no geometrical isomerism.

2-Butene, CH3-CH=CH-CH3: each double-bonded carbon carries H and CH3 cis-but-2-ene and trans-but-2-ene exist.
