The magnitude and direction of the current in the following circuit is :- [figure]
- 0.5 A from A to B through E
- 59 A from A to B through E
- 1.5 A from B to A through E
- 0.2 A from B to A through E
Answer
(1) 0.5 A from A to B through E
Solution
The positive (long-plate) terminals of the 10 V and 5 V cells both face E, so the cells oppose each other.
Net emf = 10 - 5 = 5 V, acting in the direction of the 10 V cell.
Total resistance = 2 + 1 + 7 = 10
I = 510 = 0.5 A
The 10 V cell drives current out of its + terminal towards E, i.e. from A to B through E (and back through C, D).
