DNA fingerprinting refers to :-

  1. Techniques used for molecular analysis of different specimens of DNA
  2. Analysis of DNA samples using imprinting devices
  3. Molecular analysis of profiles of DNA samples
  4. Techniques used for identification of fingerprints of individuals

Answer

(3) Molecular analysis of profiles of DNA samples

Solution

As per NCERT, DNA fingerprinting involves identifying differences in some specific regions in DNA sequence called repetitive DNA (VNTRs, satellite DNA).

⇒ DNA isolated from a sample is cut by restriction enzymes, separated by electrophoresis, blotted and hybridised with a labelled VNTR probe; the band pattern obtained is the DNA profile of that individual.

∴ DNA fingerprinting is the molecular analysis of profiles of DNA samples; it has nothing to do with the fingerprints of fingers.
