Transformation experiment was first performed on which bacterium : -

  1. Diplococcus pneumoniae
  2. Pasteurella pestis
  3. E. coli
  4. Salmonella

Answer

(1) Diplococcus pneumoniae

Solution

As per NCERT, in 1928 Frederick Griffith performed a series of experiments with Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), earlier named Diplococcus pneumoniae.

Heat-killed S-strain bacteria converted living R-strain bacteria into virulent S-strain; this was called transformation.

∴ The transformation experiment was first performed on Diplococcus pneumoniae.
