A reaction occurs spontaneously if

  1. T S < H and both H and S are +ve
  2. T S > H and H is +ve and S is −ve
  3. T S > H and both H and S are +ve
  4. T S = H and both H and S are +ve

Answer

(3) T S > H and both H and S are +ve

Solution

As per NCERT, G = H - T S; the reaction is spontaneous if G < 0.

When both H and S are positive, G < 0 only if T S > H (high temperature).

If T S < H ⇒ G > 0 (non-spontaneous); if T S = H ⇒ G = 0 (equilibrium).

With H +ve and S −ve, G is always positive.

∴ The reaction is spontaneous when T S > H and both H and S are +ve.
