Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Solution

Statement I: Correct – as per NCERT, cleistogamous flowers do not open at all; anthers and stigma lie close to each other, so these flowers are invariably autogamous as there is no chance of cross-pollen landing on the stigma.

Statement II: Correct – since there is no chance of cross-pollination, there is no new combination of genes (no genetic variation) in the offspring; this is a disadvantage, although cleistogamy assures seed-set even in the absence of pollinators.
