Identify the correct sequence of events during Prophase I of meiosis: Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. A, C, D, E, B
  2. A, B, C, D, E
  3. B, C, D, E, A
  4. B, A, C, E, D

Answer

(4) B, A, C, E, D

Solution

Prophase I has five sub-stages: leptotene → zygotene → pachytene → diplotene → diakinesis.

Leptotene: chromosomes become gradually visible under the light microscope (B).

Zygotene: synapsis of homologous chromosomes (A).

Pachytene: crossing over between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes (C).

Diplotene: dissolution of the synaptonemal complex (E).

Diakinesis: terminalisation of chiasmata (D).

∴ Correct sequence: B, A, C, E, D
