General electronic configuration of lanthanides is

  1. (n-2)f1-14 (n-1)s2p6d0-1 ns2
  2. (n-2)f0-14 (n-1)d0-1 ns2
  3. (n-2)f0-14 (n-1)d10 ns2
  4. (n-2)d0-1 (n-1)f1-14 ns2

Answer

(1) (n-2)f1-14 (n-1)s2p6d0-1 ns2

Solution

Lanthanides (Ce to Lu) are 4f-series elements of period 6 (n = 6).

As per NCERT, their general electronic configuration is [Xe] 4f1-14 5d0-1 6s2.

4f = (n-2)f1-14, the completely filled 5s and 5p = (n-1)s2p6, 5d = (n-1)d0-1 and 6s = ns2

General configuration: (n-2)f1-14 (n-1)s2p6d0-1 ns2

Option (2) and (3) wrongly allow f0 (or d10), and option (4) interchanges the f and d shells.
