Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 29 January (Evening Shift)

Match List I with List II Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. A-I, B-II, C-III, D-IV
  2. A-IV, B-I, C-II, D-III
  3. A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III
  4. A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II

Answer

(3) A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III

Solution

Acidic strength: p-nitrophenol > m-nitrophenol > phenol > ethanol

⇒ pKa: p-nitrophenol (7.1) < m-nitrophenol (8.3) < phenol (10.0) < ethanol (15.9)

∵ –NO2 at para stabilises phenoxide by –R and –I, at meta only by –I; ethoxide has no resonance stabilisation.

∴ A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III

Answer: (3)
