The correct order of first ionization enthalpy for the given four elements is :

  1. C < F < N < O
  2. C < N < F < O
  3. C < N < O < F
  4. C < O < N < F

Answer

(4) C < O < N < F

Solution

Across period 2, ionisation enthalpy generally increases with increasing nuclear charge.

∵ Nitrogen has a stable half-filled configuration 2s2 2p3, while in oxygen (2s2 2p4) two electrons occupy the same 2p orbital and repel each other,

⇒ iH1 of O is less than that of N.

Values ( kJ mol-1): C = 1086, O = 1314, N = 1402, F = 1681

∴ C < O < N < F

Answer: (4)

In which of the following options the order of arrangement does not agree with the variation of property indicated against it ?

  1. I < Br < Cl < F (increasing electron gain enthalpy)
  2. Li < Na < K < Rb (increasing metallic radius)
  3. Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < F- (increasing ionic size)

The formation of the oxide ion, O2-(g) from oxygen atom requires first an exothermic and then an endothermic step as shown below: O(g) + e- O-(g); H = -141 kJ mol-1 O-(g) + e- O2-(g); H = +780 kJ mol-1 Thus, process of formation of O2- in gas phase is unfavourable even though O2- is isoelectronic with neon. It is due to the fact that,

  1. O- ion has comparatively smaller size than oxygen atom
  2. oxygen is more electronegative
  3. addition of electron in oxygen results in larger size of the ion
  4. electron repulsion outweighs the stability gained by achieving noble gas configuration.
