Which of the following statements is the characteristic of human cornea?

  1. It is secreted by conjunctiva and glandular layer.
  2. It is a lacrimal gland which secretes tears.
  3. Blood circulation is absent in cornea.
  4. In old age it becomes the cause of cataract.

Answer

(3) Blood circulation is absent in cornea.

Solution

The cornea is the transparent anterior part of the sclera (outer fibrous layer); it is not secreted by the conjunctiva and is not a gland.

It has no blood vessels (avascular) and gets nourishment from the aqueous humour and tears; hence corneal grafts are rarely rejected.

Cataract is the opacity of the lens, not of the cornea.

∴ Blood circulation is absent in cornea.
