Frog’s heart when taken out of the body continues to beat for some time. Select the best option from the following statements.

  1. D only
  2. A and B only
  3. C only
  4. C and D only

Answer

(4) C and D only

Solution

A frog's heart beats even outside the body because the impulse for contraction is generated within the heart itself.

As per NCERT, a specialised cardiac musculature (nodal tissue, sinoatrial node) generates action potentials without any external stimuli, i.e., the heart is autoexcitable; such a heart is called myogenic.

C and D are correct and explain the observation.

A and B do not explain why the heart keeps beating after it is taken out of the body.

Answer: (4)
