Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
- (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
- Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
- (A) is not correct but (R) is correct
Answer
(3) Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
Solution
As per NCERT (electrostatic shielding): the electric field inside a cavity of a conductor (with no charge inside the cavity) is zero, whatever be the charge on the conductor or the external field.
The metal body of an aircraft acts as such a closed conductor; during a lightning strike the charge stays on its outer surface and the field inside the cabin remains zero.
Persons inside are protected, i.e. (A) is correct, and (R) is correct and is the reason for (A).
Answer: (3)
