If a geneticist uses the blind approach for sequencing the whole genome of an organism, followed by assignment of function to different segments, the methodology adopted by him is called as :
- Sequence annotation
- Gene mapping
- Expressed sequence tags
- Bioinformatics
Answer
(1) Sequence annotation
Solution
As per NCERT, the Human Genome Project followed two major approaches.
(i) Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs): identifying all the genes that are expressed as RNA.
(ii) The blind approach: sequencing the whole set of the genome, containing all the coding and non-coding sequences, and later assigning different regions in the sequence with functions.
∴ Assigning functions to the different segments of a blindly sequenced genome is called Sequence Annotation.
