Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 29 January (Evening Shift)

A reagent which gives brilliant red precipitate with Nickel ions in basic medium is

  1. dimethyl glyoxime
  2. sodium nitroprusside
  3. meta-dinitrobenzene
  4. neutral FeCl3

Answer

(1) dimethyl glyoxime

Solution

Ni2+ + 2 dmgH + 2NH3 [Ni(dmg)2] + 2NH4+ (bright red)

∵ dimethyl glyoxime forms a red square-planar chelate with Ni2+ in ammoniacal (basic) medium.

(2): sodium nitroprusside ⇒ violet colour with S2- ⇒ (2) is not a Ni2+ reagent

(3): m-dinitrobenzene ⇒ no red precipitate with Ni2+ ⇒ (3) is wrong

(4): neutral FeCl3 ⇒ test for phenols / acetate ⇒ (4) is wrong

Answer: (1)
