The length of the wire between two ends of a sonometer is 100 cm. What should be the positions of two bridges below the wire so that the three segments of the wire have their fundamental frequencies in the ratio 1 : 3 : 5.

  1. 150023 cm, 50023 cm
  2. 150023 cm, 30023 cm
  3. 30023 cm, 150023 cm
  4. 150023 cm, 200023 cm

Answer

(4) 150023 cm, 200023 cm

Solution

∵ For the same tension and wire, fundamental frequency = 12l T ⇒ 1l

⇒ l1 : l2 : l3 = 1 : 13 : 15 = 15 : 5 : 3

Sum of parts = 15 + 5 + 3 = 23, total length = 100 cm

⇒ l1 = 150023 cm, l2 = 50023 cm, l3 = 30023 cm

Positions of the bridges measured from one end:

First bridge at l1 = 150023 cm

Second bridge at l1 + l2 = 1500 + 50023 = 200023 cm

Answer: (4)
