Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 30 January (Evening Shift)

m-chlorobenzaldehyde on treatment with 50% KOH solution yields :

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

[figure]

∵ ArCHO has no α-H ⇒ with conc. (50%) KOH it undergoes Cannizzaro reaction: one molecule oxidised to ArCOO , the other reduced to ArCH2OH

(B), (D): –Cl replaced by –OH ⇒ (B), (D) are wrong (aryl C–Cl is not attacked by KOH)

(C): a benzoin, formed only with CN catalyst ⇒ (C) is wrong
