"Girdling Experiment" was performed by Plant Physiologists to identify the plant tissue through which:

  1. water is transported
  2. food is transported
  3. for both water and food transportation
  4. osmosis is observed

Answer

(2) food is transported

Solution

As per NCERT, in the girdling experiment a ring of bark up to the depth of the phloem layer is removed from the trunk. The portion of bark above the ring becomes swollen after a few weeks because food (sugars) cannot move further down.

This shows that phloem is the tissue responsible for translocation of food, in one direction (towards the roots).
