Some reactions of amines are given. Which one is not correct?

  1. [figure]
  2. CH3CH2NH2 + HNO2 CH3CH2OH + N2
  3. CH3NH2 + C6H5SO2Cl CH3NHSO2C6H5
  4. (CH3)2NH + NaNO2 + HCl (CH3)2N-N=O

Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

(1) Only primary aromatic amines form arenediazonium salts with NaNO2 + HCl. N,N-Dimethylaniline is a tertiary amine, so no diazonium salt is formed; it undergoes electrophilic substitution at the para position giving p-nitroso-N,N-dimethylaniline:

(CH3)2N-C6H5 + HNO2 (CH3)2N-C6H4-NO (para) + H2O

⇒ reaction (1) is not correct.

(2) Primary aliphatic amines with nitrous acid give alcohols with evolution of N2 ⇒ correct.

(3) A primary amine with benzenesulphonyl chloride (Hinsberg's reagent) gives N-alkylbenzenesulphonamide ⇒ correct.

(4) A secondary amine with nitrous acid gives an N-nitrosoamine ⇒ correct.
