If due to some injury the chordae tendineae of the tricuspid valve of the human heart is partially non-functional, what will be the immediate effect?
- The flow of blood into the aorta will be slowed down
- The 'pacemaker' will stop working
- The blood will tend to flow back into the left atrium
- The flow of blood into the pulmonary artery will be reduced
Answer
(4) The flow of blood into the pulmonary artery will be reduced
Solution
As per NCERT, the tricuspid valve guards the opening between the right atrium and the right ventricle; chordae tendineae hold its cusps and prevent them from turning back into the atrium when the ventricle contracts.
⇒ If the chordae tendineae are partially non-functional, during ventricular systole some blood of the right ventricle leaks back into the right atrium.
⇒ Less blood is then pumped from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery.
∴ The flow of blood into the pulmonary artery will be reduced. (The left atrium and aorta belong to the left side; the pacemaker, SAN, is not affected.)
