Name of the compound given below is [figure]

  1. 4-ethyl-3-methyloctane
  2. 3-methyl-4-ethyloctane
  3. 2,3-diethylheptane
  4. 5-ethyl-6-methyloctane

Answer

(1) 4-ethyl-3-methyloctane

Solution

Longest chain: starting from the left H3C and running along the zig-zag to the right CH3 gives 8 carbons (octane); the chain through the lower ethyl group gives only 7, so it is not chosen.

Numbering from the left end: substituents at C-3 (methyl) and C-4 (ethyl) ⇒ locant set 3, 4.

Numbering from the right end gives 5, 6, so the left-end numbering (lowest locants) is correct.

As per NCERT, substituent prefixes are written in alphabetical order (ethyl before methyl).

∴ Name: 4-ethyl-3-methyloctane
