The efficiency of Carnot engine is 50\% and temperature of sink is 500 K. If temperature of source is kept constant and its efficiency raised to 60\%, then the required temperature of sink will be

  1. 100 K
  2. 600 K
  3. 400 K
  4. 500 K

Answer

(3) 400 K

Solution

Efficiency of a Carnot engine: = 1 - T2T1

0.5 = 1 - 500T1 T1 = 1000 K

For ' = 0.6: 0.6 = 1 - T2'1000

T2' = 400 K

The (W/Q) of a Carnot engine is 16, now the temperature of sink is reduced by 62 , then this ratio becomes twice, therefore the initial temperature of the sink and source are respectively

  1. 33 , 67
  2. 37 , 99
  3. 67 , 33
  4. 97 K, 37 K
