The maximum amount of electrolytes and water (70 – 80 percent) from the glomerular filtrate is reabsorbed in which part of the nephron?
- Ascending limb of loop of Henle
- Distal convoluted tubule
- Proximal convoluted tubule
- Descending limb of loop of Henle
Answer
(3) Proximal convoluted tubule
Solution
As per NCERT, the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) is lined by simple cuboidal brush border epithelium, which increases the surface area for reabsorption.
⇒ Nearly all of the essential nutrients and 70–80 per cent of electrolytes and water are reabsorbed by this segment.
⇒ The descending limb is permeable to water only, the ascending limb to electrolytes only, and DCT shows only conditional reabsorption.
∴ Maximum reabsorption occurs in the proximal convoluted tubule.
