Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 4 April (Evening Shift)

Find out the major product formed from the following reaction. [Me : –CH3] [figure]

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

Both C–Br are allylic.

[figure]

Step 1 (SN2'): Me2NH attacks the far end of C=C; C=C shifts and one Br- leaves (allylic shift).

Step 2 (SN2): the second Me2NH replaces the other Br ⇒ two NMe2 groups on adjacent carbons, C=C on the opposite side.

∵ cis and trans dibromide follow the same path ⇒ the same product, option (1)
