Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 5 April (Evening Shift)

The fusion of chromite ore with sodium carbonate in the presence of air leads to the formation of products A and B along with the evolution of CO2. The sum of spin-only magnetic moment values of A and B is B.M. (Nearest integer) [Given atomic number : C : 6, Na : 11, O : 8, Fe : 26, Cr : 24]

Answer

6

Solution

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2

8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2

Spin-only = n(n + 2) B.M. (n = unpaired electrons)

A = Na2CrO4: Cr6+, 3d0 ⇒ n = 0 ⇒ = 0

B = Fe2O3: Fe3+, 3d5 ⇒ n = 5 ⇒ = 35 = 5.92 B.M.

Sum = 0 + 5.92 = 5.92 ≈ 6 B.M.

Answer: 6
