In the extraction of copper from its sulphide ore, the metal is finally obtained by the reduction of cuprous oxide with
- carbon monoxide
- copper (I) sulphide
- sulphur dioxide
- iron (II) sulphide
Answer
(2) copper (I) sulphide
Solution
As per NCERT, the sulphide ore is roasted to give partly cuprous oxide, and in the converter the remaining copper(I) sulphide reduces the oxide (self-reduction):
2Cu2S + 3O2 2Cu2O + 2SO2
2Cu2O + Cu2S 6Cu + SO2
∴ Cuprous oxide is reduced by copper (I) sulphide, giving blister copper.
